This Czech-language historical novel begins when the young widowed King Wenceslas IV learns that his adviser, Duke Frederick, is arriving on a diplomatic visit. He expects another tedious but unavoidable duty, unaware that Frederick is accompanied by his charming niece Sophie. A brief meeting is enough for Wenceslas to decide to break off his planned formal engagement to an Aragonese princess. He realizes that only at Sophies side can he face the upheavals shaking the Holy Roman Empire amid political and religious disputes. But will he succeed in winning the young womans affection?
