Utrpen mladho Werthera Goethe Johann Wolfgang (2018)

Johann Wolfgang Goethe wrote this Czech-language novel at the age of twenty-four and immediately became a leading figure in a new German literature. Inspired by the experience of unrequited love, he created an emblematic work of the German Sturm und Drang movement, a revolt against classical aesthetics and a rigid society that valued reason and order above all else. Goethes protagonist follows the meaning of his own heart, allows himself to be carried away by his feelings, and seeks beauty far from people, in untamed nature, where human beings alone are free. German pre-Romanticism found both its beginning and its culmination in Werther.
