When Ariadne, Princess of Crete, vows to help free the Athenian prince Theseus and his fellow tributes, sacrifices for the monster allegedly lurking beneath her palace, she hopes to free herself from her father’s savage rule as well. Instead, she is abandoned on an island the morning after Theseus has sworn his love and marriage, watching his ship sail away without her. Ariadne swears revenge, but fortunately the island belongs to a god. Dionysus may currently be a minor deity, unless wine and partying are considered important, but he and Ariadne soon realise they can help each other. Dionysus needs followers to maintain his fragile power, while Ariadne wants to stop Theseus from spreading tales of his own greatness. Together, they may create a story powerful enough to make them both legends. Ariadne is no longer interested in real love, of course, which is unfortunate because the attraction between her and the infuriating Dionysus is irresistible. He is also the first person to agree that women can be more than footnotes in men’s myths. They have power of their own, and once it is unleashed, the men in Ariadne’s story and even the gods themselves should prepare to tremble.
