This Czech-language literary work presents Pascal Quignard (born 1948), a French writer, essayist and translator known for his genre-defying, multilayered writing, which moves between fiction, philosophy and autobiography. He worked as an editor at Gallimard and as president of the baroque music festival in Versailles. His style is marked by fragmentation, vivid imagery and intense introspection, often exploring memory, silence, sexuality, the body and language. His best-known work is the novel All the Mornings of the World (1991), adapted for film; Czech translations also include Wandering Shadows, which won the Goncourt Prize in 2002, and Terrace in Rome (2000). Quignard is regarded as one of the most penetrating and original thinkers in contemporary French literature. On the night of 27 January 1997, he suffered a serious medical emergency and narrowly survived. He then withdrew completely from public life and devoted himself to the last, or in his case first, things of human existence: the archaeology of words, the genealogy of feeling and the etymology of the senses, expressed through fragments and reflections arising from reading, linguistic research and other scholarship. This gave rise to Last Kingdom, a unique literary work that now comprises twelve volumes. Although The Secret Life was published as volume eight, it is its very beginning.
