In his fourth book, Karel Kubeka follows the journey of Viktor vec in search of a mysterious inheritance left to him by a deceased relative. The narrative combines storytelling, a mosaic of small experiences and a kaleidoscope of unexpected and everyday situations, all accompanying the central plot. The book may loosely follow the poetic title Menuet podpatk daleko odsud from 2024, but it differs considerably from Kubekas first two works, which are set in a sporting environment. At times mockingly and at other times seriously, it portrays the attempt to understand the logic of life and how the world works in harmony with the inner feelings of an ordinary person living in Czech or Czechoslovak society at the end of the previous century and the beginning of this one. With gentle humour, detachment and nonchalance, Kubeka guides the reader through Viktors life complications and the individual twists leading to their resolution. The Czech-language book contains passages that merit repeated reading, gradually revealing the authors intention to place visible and hidden, yet ever-present virtues and flaws into Viktors character and personality, and not only his.
