Amber Fallbrook wakes in a stone tower overlooking a glittering ocean, knowing little more than her name and unable to recognize the beautiful, nearly naked man in her bed or the stranger who enters moments later. She soon learns that she is in her dormitory at the Alchemary, a prestigious university devoted to the study of alchemy, where she was one of the top students for two years, though she remembers none of it. The two men are brothers and her childhood friends: one claims he wants to protect her, while the other offers to help restore her memory. Yet nothing at the Alchemary is what it seems, from the intentions of its students and faculty to its labyrinthine campus and the brothers to whom Amber is increasingly attracted. Despite her amnesia, she returns to class and prepares for the deadly Alchemary Trials with the other Mastery-level students. As she studies the language and symbology of alchemy, she begins to uncover the dark shadows behind an institution devoted to the pursuit of human perfection, the truth about herself, and the legend of the Philosophers Stone.
