Antony And Cleopatra Shakespeare William (1999)

Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, Research Professor of English at the University of Sussex, this edition presents one of Shakespeares greatest tragedies, a spectacular and wide-ranging drama of love and war, passion and politics. Antony is divided between the responsibilities of imperial power and the intensity of his sexual relationship with Cleopatra. Various at once generous and ruthless, loving and jealous, petulant and majestic, she emerges as Shakespeares most complex depiction of a woman: Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale / Her infinite variety. Unsurpassed in sumptuous eloquence and powerful characterisation, Antony and Cleopatra remains deservedly popular in the theatre. Its insights into the corruptions of power and the ambiguities of desire remain timely. This volume forms part of the Wordsworth Classics Shakespeare Series, with every volume edited by Cedric Watts.
