Young people from seemingly ideal families inexplicably end their lives. In a small German town, mysterious, almost ritualistic suicides begin multiplying among young people from a single diocese. Inspector Anna, struggling through a personal crisis, is hired by a priest and church investigator to uncover the reason behind these deaths. She is a beautiful, independent young woman with a deeply distant relationship with the church and painful memories of losing a child. She finds it difficult to overcome the trauma she experienced while serving in the police, yet she discovers friends and a renewed sense of purpose in her work. Against a backdrop of murky autumn days, secluded warehouses and ever-present danger, the pair pursues the investigation with courageous determination. After an attack puts their lives at risk, a fragile bond begins to form between them. Then another crime emerges: child abuse. Worse still, the trail once again leads to the church. A surprising resolution reveals horrifying connections between the manipulated deaths of the young people. At the end of a series of terrifying, relentless experiences, two people find meaning and purity in it all.
