James Joyce’s first book, Dubliners, was not published until 1914, although the stories were written between 1904 and 1907. Joyce had to battle publishers who objected especially to his frank treatment of the subject matter, his innovative use of language reflecting the speech of ordinary Irish people, and themes that were often still taboo or hypocritically concealed at the time. Readers ultimately received a book in which the author sought to portray contemporary Ireland truthfully, above all Dublin. In fifteen stories, he presents the city at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in detailed topographical terms and sketches its inhabitants through a whole range of psychologically convincing characters.
